Why Google Maps Won't Work
Google Maps, Google Search, Gmail, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and most other Western apps are blocked in mainland China. This is due to the Great Firewall — China's internet filtering system.
- Apple Maps works in China (with limited data features)
- MAPS.ME works fully offline — no data needed
- Amap (高德地图) is the most accurate Chinese option
- Always have a backup map downloaded before going offline

Primary: Apple Maps (free, English, works out of the box)
Backup: MAPS.ME with offline China region downloaded (essential for areas with no data)
Advanced: Amap for complex transit in tier-1 cities like Beijing/Shanghai
Apple Maps — Your Primary Map
Apple Maps comes pre-installed on every iPhone and works in China. It has full English support and covers major tourist areas well.
Before You Go
- Open Apple Maps
- Search for and save your key destinations (hotel, airport, main attractions) as Favorites
- If using iOS 17+, Apple Maps supports offline access for saved maps — download your arrival city

Limitations in China
- Requires mobile data to load maps and calculate routes
- Some smaller streets and alleys may not be labeled
- Real-time traffic data is less accurate than in Western countries
- Doesn't always show building entrances accurately in dense areas
For addresses, enter them in English — Apple Maps will match them to the correct Chinese location. Search for the name of your hotel or attraction rather than the street address for better results.
MAPS.ME — Your Offline Backup
MAPS.ME is the most reliable offline navigation tool for China. Download your map regions before you go, and you can navigate completely without data.
Downloading Offline Maps
- Download MAPS.ME from App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android)
- Open the app and tap Menu → Maps
- Search for and download:
- China (entire country) — ~500MB
- Or download individual provinces: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, etc.
- Save your hotel and key destinations as bookmarks while you have data

Download all maps you need while on WiFi at home or at the airport. You won't be able to download new regions once you're offline. The entire China map is large — give yourself time before your flight.
Using MAPS.ME in China
- Search for places using English names — results are generally good for major landmarks
- Walking navigation is excellent — detailed pedestrian paths
- No public transit directions — use for walking and driving only
- The Pro version ($5.99) removes ads and enables speed camera alerts
Use MAPS.ME to navigate to a destination on foot, then switch to Didi when you need a ride. The apps work best together: MAPS.ME for orientation, Didi for transport.
Amap (高德地图) — For Complex Transit
高德地图 (Amap) is the dominant navigation app in China. It's the most accurate, but it's entirely in Chinese. Use it for complex transit routes in major cities when Apple Maps falls short.
When to Use Amap
- Taking subway, bus, or combined transit routes in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen
- Finding precise building entrances in dense commercial areas
- Getting real-time bus and metro arrival times
- Navigating within large shopping malls or train stations
How to Use Amap (Without Chinese)
- Download 高德地图 (Amap) from the app store
- Open → Tap the search bar
- Type your destination name in English — Amap will find it
- Select your destination from the results
- Tap 导航 (Navigate) — the red button
- Choose your transport mode: 🚶 Walking, 🚗 Driving, 🚌 Bus, 🚇 Metro

步行 (bùxíng) = Walking
驾车 (jiàchē) = Driving
公交 (gōngjiāo) = Bus/Transit
地铁 (dìtiě) = Metro/Subway
Navigation Tips & Checklist
Pre-Trip Checklist
- ☐ Download MAPS.ME and save China offline maps
- ☐ Save your hotel and key destinations as Favorites in Apple Maps
- ☐ Download Amap and practice entering a few addresses in English
- ☐ Screenshot your hotel's address in Chinese (ask the hotel to send it via email or WhatsApp) — show this to taxi drivers if lost
- ☐ Save your hotel's phone number in case you need to call for directions
On the Ground
- Orientation first: Open MAPS.ME without data to see where you are on the map. Get your bearings before moving.
- Ask locals: If you're very lost, show your phone screen to a passerby or shopkeeper. Chinese people are generally helpful.
- Hotel business card: Ask your hotel front desk for a business card or address card in Chinese characters — essential for getting back
- Building entrances: In dense cities like Beijing and Shanghai, building entrances can be hidden. Use the map to get close, then look for the entrance rather than the exact address number.
China's metro systems in major cities are excellent — fast, cheap, and reliable. Use Amap's transit mode to find the best metro route. Get on the metro rather than fighting traffic, especially in Beijing and Shanghai.
