What You'll Learn
This guide walks you through everything you need to use WeChat like a local in China:
- Download and install WeChat outside China
- Register with your passport and international phone number
- Set up WeChat Pay and link a foreign Visa/Mastercard
- Verify your identity for full payment features
- Troubleshoot common issues
Download & Install WeChat
Before You Leave Home
Download WeChat before arriving in China. While the app isn't blocked, app stores can behave inconsistently once you're behind the Great Firewall.
iOS (iPhone):
- Open the App Store
- Search for "WeChat" (not "Weixin" — that's the Chinese version)
- Download the app with the green speech bubble icon
- Make sure your Apple ID country setting matches your actual location

Android:
- Open Google Play Store (if available in your country)
- Search for "WeChat" and download
- If Google Play isn't available, download from wechat.com directly
Create your account at home with your regular phone number. Switching to a Chinese SIM later won't affect your account — you can keep using your original number for login.
Register Your Account
Account Creation Process
- Open WeChat and tap "Sign Up"
- Enter your international phone number (the one you use at home)
- WeChat will send a verification code via SMS
- Create a password (8-16 characters, letters and numbers)
- Set your profile: name, profile photo, and WeChat ID

Your WeChat ID can only be set once and cannot be changed later. Choose something professional and easy to share — this becomes your "username" that others can search for.
Friend Verification Requirement
New accounts often need an existing WeChat user to verify them. If prompted:
- Ask a friend who already has WeChat to scan your QR code
- Or skip this step and complete it later (some features will be limited)
- Our Pro plan includes verification assistance if you don't know anyone with WeChat
Set Up WeChat Pay
Accessing the Wallet
- Tap "Me" at the bottom right of the app
- Select "Services" (or "Wallet" on older versions)
- Tap "Money" to access payment features

Linking a Foreign Credit Card
WeChat Pay now supports international cards for tourists:
- In the Wallet, tap "Cards" or "Bank Cards"
- Tap "Add a Card"
- Select "Credit Card" and enter your card details
- Supported cards: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Diners Club
- Enter your billing address exactly as it appears on your card statement

International cards work for most purchases in China, but some merchants (especially small vendors) may only accept Chinese bank cards. Always carry some cash as backup.
Identity Verification (Real-Name Authentication)
To unlock full payment features and higher transaction limits, you need to verify your identity:
- Go to Wallet → Tap your profile or "Identity Information"
- Select "Verify Identity"
- Choose "Passport" as your ID type
- Upload a clear photo of your passport data page
- Take a selfie for facial recognition
- Wait for verification (usually instant, sometimes up to 24 hours)
Once verified, you'll have access to full WeChat Pay features including peer-to-peer transfers, red envelopes (红包), and higher payment limits.
Using WeChat Pay in China
Making Payments
To pay at a store:
- Show your QR code: Tap the "+" in the top right → "Money" → "Pay"
- The cashier scans your code
- Or scan the merchant's code: Tap "Scan" and point at their QR code

To send money to friends:
- Open a chat with the person
- Tap the "+" button next to the text input
- Select "Transfer"
- Enter amount and confirm with your payment password
Red Envelopes (红包)
Red envelopes are digital gifts of money, commonly used during festivals and celebrations:
- In a chat, tap "+" → "Red Packet"
- Enter amount and number of packets (if sending to a group)
- Add a message and send
- Recipients tap to open and receive the money instantly
Red envelopes are a big part of Chinese social culture. Sending small amounts (¥8.88, ¥66.66) to new friends or service staff can go a long way in building relationships.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
"This feature is not available in your region"
This usually means:
- Your account is registered outside mainland China
- You haven't completed identity verification
- Your WeChat version is outdated — update to the latest version
Card Linking Fails
If your international card won't link:
- Check that your card supports international transactions
- Verify the billing address matches exactly
- Try a different card (Visa and Mastercard have the best success rates)
- Contact your bank to authorize international charges from China
Account Blocked or Restricted
If WeChat flags your account:
- Don't panic — this is common for new international accounts
- Follow the in-app instructions to appeal
- You may need a Chinese friend to verify your account
- Contact WeChat support through the app: Me → Settings → Help & Feedback
Don't use VPN while setting up WeChat Pay — it can trigger security blocks. Don't send large amounts immediately after setup — build up transaction history gradually. Don't share your payment password or QR code screenshots.
