Finding halal food in China is often easier than you might expect. The key is knowing what to look for and how to find restaurants near the places you're visiting.

China has a long-established halal food tradition. The Hui, one of China's largest ethnic minority groups, number more than 11 million and live across the country. Other communities, including Uyghurs, Dongxiang and Salar, also contribute to China's halal food culture.

Halal food isn't limited to northwest China. You'll find restaurants serving it in cities across the country.

Look for 清真

The two Chinese characters 清真 (qīngzhēn) mean halal.

You'll see them on restaurant signs, menus and map listings. Some restaurants include 清真 in their names.

If you remember one Chinese term for finding halal food in China, make it this one.

Find halal restaurants on a map

Chinese map apps such as Amap (Gaode Maps) are useful because many restaurants are listed under their Chinese names.

Search for:

  • 清真 — Halal
  • 清真餐厅 — Halal restaurant
  • 清真饭店 — Halal restaurant or eatery
  • 清真牛肉面 — Halal beef noodles

Start with the area around your hotel or the attractions you're visiting. Check the location, opening hours and recent storefront photos.

Look for 清真 in the restaurant's name or on its sign. That's the most straightforward way to identify a restaurant offering halal food.

Save the Chinese name and address. It will make the restaurant easier to find again, and you can show the address to a driver if needed.

What kind of food will you find?

China's halal food includes much more than one style of cooking.

Depending on where you travel, you may find beef noodles, lamb dishes, grilled skewers, dumplings and regional specialties.

Lanzhou-style beef noodles are a familiar example. But not every beef noodle shop is halal, so look for 清真 rather than relying on the dish name.

Restaurant photos and menus can help you decide what you'd like to eat before you go.

What if there are no halal restaurants nearby?

Try searching around another neighborhood, metro station or place you're already planning to visit.

You don't have to eat every meal near your hotel. Lunch may be easier near an attraction, while dinner may be more convenient closer to where you're staying.

For days spent outside major urban areas, check your options in advance. A saved restaurant near your route can prevent an unnecessary detour later.

The goal isn't to plan every meal. It's to know where you have convenient options.

Should you stay near a halal food neighborhood?

Some cities have neighborhoods with several halal restaurants close together.

Beijing's Niujie (牛街) is one example. Known for its Hui community, halal food shops and historic mosque, it's a useful area to know about if you're looking for halal food in Beijing.

But you don't necessarily need to stay there.

For example, imagine you're spending three days in Beijing. Your hotel is already convenient for your sightseeing plans, but you've heard that Niujie has plenty of halal food.

You could visit Niujie for a meal and explore the neighborhood while you're there. For other meals, search for 清真 restaurants closer to the places you're visiting that day.

Moving your hotel to Niujie might give you more dining choices nearby, but it could also make your daily sightseeing less convenient.

If easy access to several halal restaurants is especially important to you, staying near Niujie may be worth considering. Otherwise, keeping your original hotel and finding food along your route may work just as well.

The best location is the one that works for your whole trip, not just your meals.

What about prayer?

If you also need to plan around prayer, check mosque locations separately.

Some neighborhoods with established Muslim communities have both halal restaurants and mosques. But a halal restaurant nearby doesn't automatically mean there's an accessible place to pray.

Consider the locations and timing of your activities if prayer arrangements are part of your travel requirements.

Before you go

Save 清真 on your phone, search for restaurants near your hotel and main sightseeing areas, and keep a few useful locations in your map app.

You don't need a nationwide restaurant list. Knowing how to find halal food wherever you go is more useful.
