Our rule: Use Alipay and WeChat for everyday payments. Keep your physical cards and RMB 500–1,000 as backup.
Why Alipay + WeChat
Mobile payment is the easiest way to pay for most everyday things in China — from restaurants and shops to taxis.
Set up both Alipay and WeChat Pay before your trip.
Why both? If one app or payment method doesn't work when you need it, you already have another option.
Get them ready before you fly
Download Alipay and WeChat, create your accounts and add your bank cards before you leave for China.
Follow the in-app prompts for any verification required.
Before you fly, open both apps again and make sure you can access your accounts and your cards are still linked.
Card won't link?
If a card won't link, try your other card or contact your card issuer before your trip.
Your backup matters
If possible, don't make your entire payment setup depend on one bank card. A second card gives you another route if the first one is declined or doesn't work.
A better setup:
Bring the physical cards and some RMB cash too, so you still have another way to pay if mobile payment doesn't work.
Only have one usable card?
That's fine. Use it for both apps — but carry more cash, so you still have a backup if that card doesn't work.
Before you fly
- Alipay ready
- WeChat ready
- Second card packed, if available
- RMB backup ready
- You know your fallback
Then stop preparing.
