You sit down at a restaurant in China. There's a QR code on the table, but no menu in sight.
You scan it. A Chinese menu opens. Maybe you can't translate it. Maybe it asks you to log in. Maybe you can choose your food but can't complete the order.
You don't have to figure out the ordering system. Just ask someone to help you order.
Ask the staff to take your order
If you're having trouble with the QR code, call a waiter over.
Show them this:
可以帮我点餐吗?我不太会用这个扫码点餐。
Could you help me order? I'm having trouble with the QR code menu.
They may take your order directly or help you place it using their system.
You don't need to explain what went wrong with the app.
What if the menu is only in Chinese?
If there's a printed menu, use your translation app's camera to read it.
If the menu is only on your phone, take screenshots and translate them.
Find the dishes you want, then show the waiter.
If you're unsure about an ingredient, ask before ordering. Don't rely on an automatic translation for food allergies.
Ask to pay directly
You don't have to complete payment inside the ordering app if the restaurant can take payment another way.
Show the staff:
可以帮我结账吗?我想直接付款。
Could you help me pay directly?
They may be able to give you a regular Alipay or WeChat Pay QR code, take payment at the counter, or offer another payment method.
Just confirm that your order hasn't already been paid for before paying again.
What if they can't help?
Some restaurants may only accept orders through their digital system.
If the staff can't offer another way and you still can't order, it's fine to leave and find another restaurant.
You're in China to enjoy a meal, not spend half an hour figuring out a mini-program.
Our advice: If the QR code becomes a problem, stop troubleshooting and ask a person.
Most of the time, that's the simpler place to start.
