My Hotel in China Is Asking Me to Pay Again — What Should I Do?

You’re checking in or checking out, and the hotel is asking you to pay — but you think you already paid when you booked.

Before paying again, find out exactly what the hotel is asking you to pay for.

A payment shown in your booking, bank account or card does not always mean the same thing. The hotel may be asking for the room payment, a deposit or something else.

Check the payment terms on your booking

Open the actual booking confirmation.

Look for wording such as:

  • paid
  • prepaid
  • pay at the property
  • payment collected by the booking platform
  • payment collected by the hotel
  • deposit or additional charges

Also check the amount and currency.

Don’t rely only on a bank notification or card transaction. Start with what the booking says you were supposed to pay and when.

Ask the hotel what this payment is for

Before paying, ask whether they are requesting:

  • the room charge
  • a deposit
  • another hotel charge
  • payment for something not included in the booking

You can show the front desk:

请问这笔费用是什么?是房费还是押金?我的订单显示已经付款了。

Could you please tell me what this charge is for? Is it the room payment or a deposit? My booking shows that I already paid.

The answer determines what to check next.

If it is a deposit, keep it separate from the room payment

A hotel deposit or card hold is not necessarily a second room payment.

Ask:

  • how much the deposit is
  • how it will be taken
  • when it should be released or returned
  • whether you will receive a receipt or record

If the hotel is asking for a deposit, don’t describe it as a duplicate room charge unless you have confirmed that it actually is one.

If the hotel says the room has not been paid for

Show the hotel the payment status on your booking confirmation.

If you booked through a platform, check whether the platform says it collected the payment or whether payment was supposed to be made at the property.

If the booking clearly shows that the room was already paid through the platform but the hotel still asks you to pay the room charge again, contact the booking platform before making another room payment if you reasonably can.

Tell them:

I’m at the hotel now. My booking shows that the room is paid, but the hotel is asking me to pay the room charge again.

Let the platform and hotel work out how the booking was supposed to be settled.

If you need to pay before the problem can be resolved

Sometimes you may be standing at the front desk late at night and need a room now.

Before making another payment, make sure you understand:

  • what you are paying for
  • the amount
  • who is charging you
  • whether the hotel says this is a new room payment or a temporary deposit

If you decide to pay because you need to get checked in, keep:

  • the booking confirmation
  • the original payment record
  • the new receipt
  • any messages with the hotel or booking platform

Paying again may solve the immediate check-in problem, but it does not by itself prove which party should ultimately keep the money.

If you were actually charged twice

Keep the records for both charges.

Then contact whoever controls the payment you believe is wrong — the hotel or the booking platform — and ask them to review it.

If one of the charges is still only pending, check whether it is a temporary authorization or deposit before treating it as a completed duplicate charge.

If the hotel and booking platform disagree about what happened, keep the booking confirmation, receipts and transaction records while they investigate.
