If this is an emergency, see What If Something Goes Wrong While Traveling in China? This guide is about everyday situations where language is making a problem harder to solve.
Do You Actually Need a Conversation?
Before looking for someone who speaks Chinese, try the simplest way to communicate what you need.
| Situation | Try first |
|---|---|
| You need to show where you are going | Show the Chinese address |
| You need to prove a booking | Show the booking confirmation |
| You need to understand a sign or menu | Use camera translation |
| You need to ask one simple question | Use a translation app |
| You need to explain a problem | You may need a real conversation |
| Someone keeps calling you | You may need communication help |
Sometimes showing the right information is easier than translating the conversation.
Find the Person Who Can Actually Fix It
If you do need to explain a problem, make sure you are talking to someone who can actually change the outcome.
| Problem | Start here |
|---|---|
| Hotel booking | Hotel + booking provider |
| Ride | Driver / ride platform |
| Train ticket | Railway + ticket provider |
| Attraction ticket | Attraction + booking channel |
| Flight | Airline |
| Bank card | Bank / card issuer |
Someone nearby may speak excellent English and still have no way to change your booking, find your lost item or fix your ticket.
The best English speaker is not always the person who can solve the problem.
If you are not sure who actually owns the problem, see What If Something Goes Wrong While Traveling in China?
Make the Problem Easy to Explain
Before translating anything, collect the information the other person is likely to need.
- Booking or order number
- Name used for the booking
- Date and time
- Address or location
- Screenshot of the booking, ticket or error
- What happened
- What you need now
Keep the explanation short.
Translation works well when the problem is simple and the conversation is predictable.
YES
I have this booking, but the hotel cannot find it. Could you check this booking number?
NO
The hotel says the booking provider needs to fix it. The booking provider says I need to speak to the hotel.
In the first case, translation may be all you need.
In the second, the difficult part is no longer translating a sentence. Someone may need to ask questions, call back, speak to both sides or follow up later.
Translation helps with the words. It does not always move the problem forward.
When Is Human Help Worth It?
When communication itself is stopping the problem from moving.
Human help starts making sense when:
- You need someone to call in Chinese.
- Someone keeps calling you and you cannot understand each other.
- The conversation requires several follow-up questions.
- Two different parties are sending you back and forth.
- Someone needs to check something and you have to follow up later.
- You have already moved on, but the problem has not.
At this point, you don’t need more translation. You need someone to keep the conversation moving.
When a small problem starts taking time and attention away from your trip, having someone you can message makes a difference.
ChinaGo Concierge can help work out who to contact, communicate in Chinese, and follow up when one conversation is not enough.
You still make the decisions. You still pay providers directly. We help get the problem moving again.
